GOKb Review Request: Match was made on 1st class identifier but title name seems to be very different

Full text of review request

Match was made on 1st class identifier but title name seems to be very different. New Title added as a variant of Existing Title.

Description

This review task is generated if two titles were matched and merged using on of the GOKb first class identifiers (ISSN, e-ISSN, DOI, and ISBN), but the words in the title seem to indicate that the merge may have been incorrect.

Solution

  1. Research the new and existing titles and determine whether they are variant titles for the same work or two separate entitles.
  2. Note that earlier and later names for the same title are treated as separate records in GOKb.
  3. Sources you may wish to use include:
    1. The publisher's website
    2. Ulrich's
    3. ISSN Portal
    4. OCLC

If the title match was correct

  1. No action is required.
  2. Close the review task.

Example: 'Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach' added as a variant of 'Sports Health'.

In this case, GOKb has suggested that a match was made in error, but further investigation confirms that the match was in fact correct. If you look at the two titles that were merged together, you will see they are variants where one includes a subtitle and the other does not.

If the title title match was incorrect

  1. Establish the existing title record as one of the two titles. (It doesn't really matter which.)
    1. Remove any variant titles relating to the title you're getting rid of.
    2. Delete any identifiers relating to the title you're getting rid of.
  2. Verify that any related TIPP records belong with the title you chose in Step 1.
    1. Verify and correct the host.platform.url
    2. Verify and correct the coverage statement
  3. Create a new title record for the title that you removed from the original record
  4. Create a new TIPP by adding your new title record to the correct package.
  5. Close the review task.

Example: 'Psychological Science in the Public Interest' added as a variant of 'Perspectives on Psychological Science'.

In this example, the two titles that were matched appear to be quite different. Looking up each one in the ISSN Portal revealed that they are in fact two separate titles, each with its own ISSNs. This was confirmed by the fact that the title record contained two ISSNs and two E-ISSNs. (Generally, a title should only have one of each.)
