RT: 193981 - Catalog not ignoring articles in searches

Description

Site: Missouri Western State University
URL: https://openrs.searchmobius.org

MWSU is reporting that the search function in OpenRS does not ignore grammatical articles (a, an, the, and articles from other languages) when they are included without quotation marks in a keyword or title search.

Performing a search in OpenRS, a keyword search for an age and the age return 53,371 and 122,187 results while age returned 135,250 results.

A title search for a family and the family returned 15,461 and 28,637 results while family returned 48,961 results.

I have attached screenshots.

Think you are missing the point here, what they are saying as I understand it is that the search is not ignoring “and”, “the”, “a”, etc … the normal things that get ignored when searching.

What is happening here is that matche that are complete “A Family” are ranking higher than “anything Family” - if you scroll down the list on the “A Family” search for example you will see that there are non-leadning article matches:

So the actual behaviour is that records that contain the exact entered text are ranking higher than non-exact matches.
