Introduction to OLE
Kuali OLE (Open Library Environment) empowers libraries to leverage the expertise within the library community to find solutions for common needs. The processes for purchasing, tracking, and managing collections in a digital environment are far different from the print-based workflows now underpinning many library management systems. Kuali OLE offers a new and better alternative.
Motivated by the understanding that only by working together can libraries realize their potential, a partnership of top research libraries is now making Kuali OLE a reality. Together they are defining the next-generation library management system and will make it freely available as community-source software, which libraries can adapt for local implementation and enhance for the common good.
More than 300 libraries, educational institutions, professional organizations, and businesses have already helped identify the project scope. Forward-thinking partner libraries have invested in the project and are leading its development. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation provides generous support for the development project, having previously funded the initial planning grant.
Kuali OLE intends to deliver nothing less than an enterprise-ready, community source software package for academic and research libraries and a governance model in which the entire library community can collaborate to own and govern the resulting intellectual property.
