Locate Provider Title Lists for the First Time

When working with a new provider in GOKb, the first task will be to establish the best source of that provider's title lists. This module will describe common sources for this data.

Steps

Step 1: Check the KBART registry

  • The KBART registry provides contacts, URLs and instructions relating to the transfer of e-resource metadata between content providers and link resolvers.
  • If a provider endorses KBART and makes its information available on the registry, this is our first choice data source.
  • Title lists posted to the KBART registry should be of good quality and easy-to-use formatting.
  • The KBART registry can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/kbartregistry/
  • If a provider is listed here, you can move on to the next module.

Step 2: Check the provider's web site

  • If a provider is not listed on the KBART registry, the publisher's web site is another likely source of information.
  • You will need to search the site for a page that contain the publisher's title lists.
  • This information is often found under the following types of headings:
    • Librarians
    • Publications
    • Subscriptions
    • Journals
    • Ebooks
    • Backfiles
  • Ideally, you will be able to locate individual title lists for each package offered by the provider or a master list of all offerings.
  • Sometimes lists for different types of materials (journals, ebooks, backfiles, etc.) will be grouped separately.
  • If you find title list information on a provider web site, you can move on to the next module.

Step 3: Contact the publisher

  • If you cannot find suitable information on the KBART registry or the publisher's web site, you will need to contact the provider.
  • Identify a contact at the provider's organization.
    • If you have a personal relationship with a sales rep, they may be a good starting point.
    • You can also look for a directory on the provider web site or a general customer service contact.
  • Call or email the provider to ask if they can provide you with the necessary title lists.
  • If you receive title list information from a provide, you can move on to the next module.
