Glossary
The ECS Glossary contains additional terms that are used in the FOLIO context. These need to be reconciled with canonical DCB terms, and those used in Sierra and Polaris contexts.
Agency - treated as the same as a library
Author -
Borrowing library – Library maintaining and supplying patron identity for DCB patron authentication; Library on the receiving end of a circulating item from Lending Library following a patron request; Library responsible for discharging and returning circulating item to Lending Library, if patron returns to Borrowing Library
Cluster - Also referred to as Module Consortium, it is the single aggregation of tenants associated with a consortium of local library tenants.
Consolidated holdings – Network wide
Contributor -
DCB – Direct Consortium Borrowing application streamlines the process of borrowing and lending to and by members of a consortium. Primarily, the DCB acts as a hub / broker to update state transitions between the member libraries engaged in reciprocal borrowing.
Direct on-site borrowing - Circulation of items directly from Lending Library; Lending Library staff checks materials out to patron through DCB app.
Format -
Host LMS vs System (term used in the UI might be different to the one used in the backend)
Lending library (aka Owning library) – Library on the receiving end of the near real-time (NRT) request from Borrowing Library; Library that either circulates an item to the Borrowing Library or uses the ILS to cancel a request from the Borrowing Library if no item is available; Library responsible for assigning a return date and tracking location of item
LOCATE - FOLIO’s OPAC that runs on top of DCB with small variations of the local version of Locate. It allows patrons to search for resources not owned by their library or resources owned by their library but currently unavailable (e.g., all items are checked out).
LOCATE is a proprietary OPAC developed and maintained by EBSCO. One version of LOCATE is for use with FOLIO and another version is for use with OpenRS. We call the OpenRS version LOCATE DCB.
Match key – Information from an instance title field and / or other relevant data fields in a bibliographic record that is used to identify and consolidate identical holdings in the DCB environment; One component of the match, often not identifying and deduplicating in more complex record scenarios
Material Type -
Member - A library system that participates in an organized group of library systems for resource / cost sharing efforts.
Normalized – Result of structuring content of data fields that can be matched when compared against other strings of similarly structured data, [reducing redundancy and improving integrity]
OpenRS (Open Resource Sharing) – The name for the OLF Resource Sharing project. In a product context, OpenRS DCB (Direct Consortium Borrowing) allows libraries to perform consortial borrowing between libraries whether they use the same or different Library Services Platforms/Integrated Library Systems. As we move forward with OpenRS, development tracks for OpenRS ILL and OpenRS Document Delivery will emerge.
Orphaned Request – A supplier request for which somehow we've lost an outer context (ie, a patron, an item, a patron request). A catch all term for foreign key violation in the request context.
Owning library (aka Lending library) – Library on the receiving end of the near real-time (NRT) request from Borrowing Library; Library that either circulates an item to the Borrowing Library or uses the ILS to cancel a request from the Borrowing Library if no item is available (draft notes: may or may not become the lending library for owned materials)
Request – Documentation of an authenticated patron’s petition to borrow a resource (e.g., book, map).
