Tips for Starting UI Mockups

Whether creating some mockups on your own, or preparing to work with a group, the list below can help you to take the pressure off you and your team to begin the design process.

  1. Brainstorm what you like and don't like about current applications
  2. Bring screen captures- highlight important changes you'd like to change
  3. Start with storyboarding workflow: how do you start? Search? Then what?
  4. List the pages you'll need, and group them together to complete a workflow or function: 1,2,3,4

  2. Now organize the groupings on the page
  3. How do you want the groupings to appear (sections, vertical tabs, horizontal tabs, boxes)?
  4. Now the fun begins- how do you want to display each field? Make selections- Drop-downs, tips, previews, lookups?.
  5. Take all of the above and capture in wireframe mockups using the tool of your choice- Balsamiq, Dreamweaver/Front Page, napkins, whiteboards (take a pic!)
  6. Once collected, go thru a time-limited review with your team- how would you like to improve or change?
  7. Make a companion document describing each mockup: how should it work, what is the precursor, what notes do you want to include because you couldn't quite capture exactly what you wanted to communicate in the mockup!
  8. Use your project team- we can help or review
  9. Breathe! UI design is iterative, and OLE user interface designs are not permanent, but will change and improve.
